Choosing A Partner / Mate For Life
65Last night, Wensday 3/31/10, on The Ask Hakim The Truth show, @ www.blogtalkradio.com/ask-hakim, Abdul Hakim discussed crucial information covering the topic of Choosing A Partner / Mate For Life. The show is available for download upon request or for listening direct. Seven secular points of advice were touched upon, as well as, a brief mention of religious (i.e. Islamic, Christian, Jewish) criteria and/or instructions on what to look for in choosing a spouse.
Because the family unit is the building blocks of any and every society, the ability to establish a strong family unit is of the utmost importance. As a matter of Islamic fact, the greatest feat that the Shaytan can accomplish in his devish antics, is to destroy the family unit, "To separate the husband from the wife."
Due to statistics illuminating the astronomical divorce rates, it is apparent to me that the devil is doing his thing. Being a proponent of the maxim "everything we do is based upon learned behavior," I believe that in order to reverse the trend of divorcing couples, re-education is necessary. I'd even venture to say that maybe just maybe we need to turn to the ways and days of old in many aspects to map out a sound criteria or bases for picking our husbands or wives.
I think that we can, and, should look to successful couples who have achieved longevity in a marriage or relaitonship and question them about what it took for them to make it work. From this type of approach we will be able to garner commonalities from their examples and discussion. Having this information will then allow us to formulate a model to be followed. In addition to this, we can also look to the information that is already available for advice, which is not in shortage at all. Today, thanks to the World Wide Web, we are not lacking information on any topic really.
The statement from Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) "have you looked at her" was explained in the show last night and a parallel drawn to "Find out who they really are." In addition, the four things that he (peace and blessing be upon him) said a man marries for was related as well.
1) Her religion; 2) Her Beauty; 3) Her Wealth; and 4) Noble Lineage.
The secular seven items that were discussed in the show are listed below:
1) Find out who they really are
2) Should be someone like you
3) Values should be similar
4) Life plans should be similar
5) Someone you can be open and honest with
6) Able to get along with their family
7) Should be a compliment
